Hi, Ed, I originally saw an ad in Vintage Guitar, I believe, and bought 3 picks, probably a little over a year ago. Anyway, over time, they’ve gotten lost or stolen (actually, I FOUND one yesterday and I was seriously happy!), so I’m hoping 6 will last for a while. Best regards. Larry
Ed, Thanks for your development of the Wing Pick. I have been playing guitar since 1983, and this is the best pick I have ever used. It is now the only pick I will use when playing for fun or performance. I have never dropped this pick, even when I am playing hard and fast. Thanks again for this great pick. I love it! Paul B.
Using the WINGpick has been a real aid for me. First, I do not get the hand cramps as often with the WINGpick, and I am able to control the pick better, which helps eliminate the pick noise (clicking) as I play. I do recommend the Wingpick, and have promised one to a newly retired friend of mine who is ready learn how to play the dulcimer she has had under the bed for 20 years. Linda C.
Dude did you get my last message? I know your’e probably busy, but hey, it totally does stay in place when I stick it under the strings! SWEET! I just now tried that out! This f…ing pick does everything you said it would do! that rocksa! just had to let yah know! sorry if you have trouble reading this I am a little tipsy! Melissa
Ed, Thank you for soliciting my feedback on the wing pick. I tried out the wing pick last night. I like it but I do have one suggestion. The shape is great, but I think using a stiffer, or thicker, rubber would be helpful. It's too soft and flexes too much for me. I think eliminating the cutout like you mentioned for the heavier pick is also a great idea. In fact, the more I think about it, the other pick you mentioned might just fit the bill. The flexibility of the grip might work great for me if the pick
didn't have the cutout.
Please keep in mind that my perspective is from someone who has carpal tunnell, so I kind of fall out of the mainstream.
I am also an amateur player.
I'll try the heavier pick and some of your other ones at some point in the future. My wife is on my case about buying picks so I need to keep a low profile. I've bought a lot of picks lately. She doesn't quite understand. Thanks. Ken
I just wanted to let you know that I use your WingPick and I love it… I will have to buy one of each now…I have the orange one…if I see you tonite at the Jam at Larry’s, bring one of each and I will pay ya… Thanks again. Paula
Hi, I met you at the Portland guitar show in June and bought one of your wing picks. I am now suggesting it to my friends. I need to order 8 more of your medium 60 picks so I can give away a few and to keep a few for myself. I love your pick! Thanks. Harry S.
Hi Ed, thank you for sending our order out so quickly. My husband and I have enjoyed using the wingpick you gave us at the LaCenter Grange First teenth Friday. My husband loves to use the pick when picking out a lead. The wing pick stays in place and he can relax his hand. I use it mostly for strumming, not much picking. Three of the women in a band I belong to are also using them. It's a great product. Thanks. Leith
I love your idea. I was able to try your design early on and it worked great!! They are fantastic for strumming and using the Wing edge gives a lovely mellow tone! You have designed a great product and im very happy with it. I have to say that i don’t find them too great for fast lead work but for country/blues licks they are fine. Craig F.
This pick is the bomb, never drop them, just lose them from time to time, and I'm here to tell you they really last a long time, I am still picking with the same pick going on a year, and just received my stock to last me a lifetime. Thanks Ed, for this truly awesome product that really works like you say it does, checks in the mail. Michael B.
I just wanted to again thank you for the WingPick. It is by far the best pick I have ever used. No longer do I have the pick dissapearing from between slick fingers or my hand getting tired from gripping it. Great design. Keep up the good work. Andy T.
I have worked with it a little and it seems more comfortable for my mandolin playing. B. is real happy with his. He hasn't flipped it out of his hand in the middle of a song yet,(he can empty his pick holder in two sets). He also noticed he could "palm" your pick and finger pick the middle of a song and still have it ready for his normal picking style. Thanks, A. Wood
Hey Ed! Hi how are you?
Big thanx for the picks... I´ve been using them and i only find one inconvenience... that I always hold picks in my mouth when i´m doing something else and they feel strange and taste weird hahaha... no I´m just kidding. They are great! It feels very good playing with them... Oh by the way I´m using the green one, the medium size i think, for me it´s the one that feels better.
I´m gonna give Gil (the other guitar player in Cabo Wabo) one for him to try, ok? So I´ll tell you what he thinks about it later.
Thanx for everything again!
If there´s anything I can do to thank you, I´ll do it. Cheers from Cabo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Juan C
Hi Ed, I meant to write to you sooner. I received the wing picks and I really love them. The wing grip portion is softer and more flexible than I imagined and they are very comfortable to hold. I think you came up with a really beautiful idea and I wish you very much success. I'll more than likely be ordering more of you picks down the road. Keep up the great work and congrats on a fabulous idea. Best Wishes, Peter Z
Ed, I’ve tried it for a while now and I’m sold on the Wing Pick. Not only is it easier to hold on to, I like the sound and feel when strumming. Also, it seems to be holding up really well. I’m ordering some today. Tom S.
Hello Ed. I ordered three of your light wing picks. My thoughts after 3 hours on acoustic and electric sets of 11s and 10s, respectively:Good concept, but with so much of the upper part of the pick removed, the pick's inherent resistance applied against the string has diminished to the point of being very difficult/ impossible to use. Rapid picking cannot be accomplished without holding the pick very close to it's tip, increasing the travel distance of the hand, resulting in slower play and increased hand fatigue. The grip aspect is very good, of course.I would suggest that the pick be placed in the rubber tab sleeve in it's natural shape. The friction of the tab will suffice to give a secure grip and the pick will retain its "feel/ playability" to which players are accustomed. I'll be happy to return the three picks to you in exchange for ones with the picks in their original shape. A final comment, I think the rubber sleeve could be shortened a good 1/8" from each end. To my hand, that would be a better fit. I hope you don't mind that this is less then a glowing feedback note. You have a very good idea started here. Layne
Hello Ed: Tried out the wing pick and here's my break-down. Sorry my outlook express got trojan stuck in it so I'm using my comcast email center instead of your website. pros- can pick brighter on the first 4 strings
can add truer strums in the lower strings, especially when using the dual use method:
(I use the pick in the lows and figerpick with nails on the highs)
less tightly integrated feeling when doing the dual strum
diffferent-more room to grab
fits better between E and A on my fretboard (outside the nut)
has a brighter sound the Dunlop
turn pick so pick and handle combine to sound like double strumming sound
cons- handle alone on strings stick or feel like it should be more like a pick feel. slows action down.
have to learn slightly how to do even scales, but time will bring it in.
conclusion-I will be purchasing 3 when the 20th rolls around.
final- hope you include a business card for ever pick I purchase. I intend on passing them out and they would contact you.
Steve
Nice job Ed! You're making me want to learn to play!
I am happy with the design because it makes the pick easier to hold. I have not flipped one of these picks across the floor yet. I have given several picks away, and have also directed other dulcimer players to your web site. Many of our members are retired or older. Arthritis and grip are often a concern. (I gave two older picks away last week to a couple, aged 92 and 96, who are taking up the dulcimer now because the accordian is now too heavy.)
WING pick review ….. Alan S. Toowoomba, Australia
I confess to being in two minds about the WING pick. No, I have no doubts about the effectiveness of the product (more on that later), but my ambivalence centres on which of the two basic designs I need to use. In the end, I think my answer will be “Probably both”. But let me start at the beginning …..
As a fairly average player of guitar (Ovation), mandolin (Fender Mandostrat) and bass (Ibanez 5-string) in three different church bands, I’m no stranger to the frustration of slippery picks, particularly when strumming hard and fast. To be honest, it’s been pretty rare that I’ve ever actually dropped a pick mid-song, but often there’s been that “micro pause” while I desperately readjust the pick position in my hand before it heads south. I’ve experimented with various “solutions’ over the years, and had pretty much settled for using a large pick with small holes poked in it with a red-hot needle! I came across the WING pick when I watched a Youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWUFZHnSm-E&t=72s) of the inventor demonstrating the product. When he said it was pretty much impossible to drop his pick, I cynically thought, “Yeah, right!”, but I was intrigued enough to order some samples of his wares. (Buying by the dozen is the way to go, because the price per unit is much cheaper.)
Put simply, the WING Pick works. I even tried taking my fastest song on guitar, and strumming it at about twice the normal speed – rock solid. The rubber moulding at the top is the key, and it certainly enhances your ability to hang on. Obviously, there are various pick thicknesses available, depending on your preference and your instrument, but the one aspect I really wasn’t sure about was whether the “cut-out” style would be better for me than the “no cut-out”, or vice versa. After experimentation, I plan on using both — the “cut-out” style is most suited to fast strumming on the guitar or mando, because you can grip the rubber moulding as hard as you like, which really does make it pretty much impossible to drop. (Try doing that with an ordinary pick, and just listen to the harsh sound you get!) On the other hand, having little or none of the actual plastic pick between your fingers means less control, which is why I prefer the “no cut-out” style when picking.
Criticisms? None to speak of ….. the rubber moulding, to me, seems unnecessarily wide, but then I note that it's possible to turn the pick and use the “wing” for a softer touch, so I concede that probably has its uses for some. No matter, since having a wider moulding in no way impacts on the pick doing its advertised job.
In short, I consider this a great little solution, particularly for rhythm players — I certainly will be using WING picks for both my guitar and mandolin; for bass, I will probably use a "no cut-out" one, although slippery picks are less of a problem for me on the bass.
FYI, I purchased a range of .60 mm and .73 mm WING picks in both “cut-out” and “no cut-out” styles. I also tried one of the heavy 1.14 mm mando picks, but found that a little too thick for my style of playing — your mileage may vary.
Throughout, inventor Ed Warmack has been quickly responsive to my e-mails (I live in Australia) and the product was shipped promptly after I ordered. (Delivery here took a leisurely two weeks, but that’s the fault of our trans-Pacific mail system, which only marginally outperforms an outrigger canoe! :-)
Heartily recommended – the best designs are simple ones that just work, and the WING pick fits that description. Alan.
